Every so often I am lucky enough to find people who can engage in philosophical conversations about the meaning of life, or the problem of evil, or spiritual frustration- fearlessly and defenselessly. Curiosity at its best. In these conversations, I find that I tend to throw out the idea of light and darkness needing each other and exploring the implications that has on good and evil. I'd say that in a lot of ways this idea has flexibly made sense of some of the transcendental questions I have about human existence and the "tree of the knowledge of good and evil" from the Garden.... Or at least it has shed light on them. pun intended.
To think that God is eternal is to say that good is eternal. To say that good is eternal is to imply that its opposite is eternal. Let's assume its opposite is evil. The absence of good is evil, right? Time and time again the Bible refers to God as light. I believe this was an incredibly intentional identity of God's choosing. After all, even scientists agree that the only physical constant is the speed of light; they compare all things "relative to the speed of light". Lightis. And darkness is only when light is not. The absence of light is darkness. What a fantastic way for us to understand the One who is responsible for the existence of the cosmos?! When I learn things about light and darkness, like from this TEDx video, my brain starts racing with all the wonder-full implications its scientific findings have on spiritual realities or vice versa. tomato tomato. I hope you enjoy the video as much as I did.
