Canadians are obsessed with American politics. Blanket statement, I know. But in the 6 days that I was there, 9 out of 10 group conversations I encountered revolved around American politics. I shouldn't have been surprised, considering the fact that one of them was wearing an "Obama 08" shirt, nonetheless owned one, when I met him. In light of what I've said before, You can only imagine my inner frustrations with these conversations.
After leaving an obnoxious conversation that I so ignorantly involved myself in, I was explaining to a friend why I try to avoid political discussions and the like. He challenged me by saying because of my views and passions I would make a good political mind, even politician. I resented him saying that. ... Then I flashed back to the initial major I picked in college- Government. Hilarious! In my salutatorian address to my high school, I actually mentioned going off to college and majoring in Government! (That really cracks me up. After one semester, I changed my major quickly.) ... In my resentment towards the admonishment from my friend, I started to mull over why I've begun to bypass as much as I can politically. I think I've figured out the root.
You've heard the quote "To whom much is given, much is required" (Luke 12:48)? This verse's conviction has often manifested itself in my mind as "with much knowledge comes much responsibility". Perhaps, in the back of mind, I've kept my distance from politics to avoid responsibility? Perhaps this is why so many people avoid reading the Bible?
With that being said, I am not proud of sounding irresponsible. I hope that is not what you are gathering. I'm merely deducing what my motivations might have been to lead me away from majoring in Government toward the path to which I am now committed.

interesting stuff
I was thinking about it, and perhaps its easier for those Canadians to get into American politics because they have no responsibility with it. It's only for interest sake that they talk about it. They are not marinating in the raw, dirty politics of it all. Rather they find themselves looking at America like a football fan looks at a coach. Even though they are not playing the game, they still think that they could run the team better then the coach even though they are just sitting on the coach watching the game from their living room.
Though I dont know if its a bad thing./.. perhaps if anyone find themself wanting to get into politics, maybe it would be easier to get into another counties first. It might be easier to find a more objective approach to politics that way.
