The Shadow Proves The Sunshine

Sunshine, won't you be my mother
Sunshine, come and help me sing
My heart is darker than these oceans
My heart is frozen underneath
We are crooked souls trying to stay up straight,
Dry eyes in the pouring rain where
The shadow proves the sunshine
Two scared little runaways
Hold fast till the break of daylight where
The shadow proves the sunshine
Oh Lord, why did you forsake me?
Oh Lord, don't be far away away
Storm clouds gathering beside me
Please Lord, don't look the other way
(I'm a) Crooked soul trying to stay up straight
Dry eyes in the pouring rain where
The shadow proves the sunshine
The shadow proves the sunshine
Two scared little runaways
Hold fast to the break of daylight where
The shadow proves the sunshine
Yeah Yeah, shine on me
Crooked souls trying to stay up straight
Dry eyes in the pouring rain where
The shadow proves the sunshine
Two scared little runaways
Hold fast to the break of day light where
The shadow proves the sunshine

I have to share with you why I bolded the first line I bolded. I recently learned the literal meaning of the word "wicked". It's origins go back to the word for a bent, or crooked, wooden stick. It's root word is "wicce" or "wicca" wich is "to bend". Hence the name of wicker furniture- it is bent wood. We are bent, broken, not whole, and so in need of One who can make us straight.

The second line I bolded is very dear to me. It is one of my favorite lyric lines of all time. When having apologetic discussions with people, it is one of my favorite concepts. When representing how good and evil exist, I compare them to light and darkness. Light and darkness contrast because one cannot be where the other is. The sceptic is always quick to say that it is not true and think that "shadows" are proof of light and darkness co-existing in peace. But I am always quick to remind them that all the shadow does is prove the existence of light, the need of light, and the fact that to be seen, darkness needs light. Light does not need darkness.

Are you going to Liz's wedding? Is Steve coming? I'm going, but Nathan isn't. I figure, since he's going to the wedding in Montana with me, I can't force him to go to another wedding the next week, or two weeks. Whatever it is. I hope I see you there. Miss you!
