A kiss made a boo boo better. An ice-cream cone made being left out seem not so bad. A back scratch made tears go away. And a lollipop made getting shots from the doctor worth it. Aahh- those were the pills of childhood. For some reason, thinking about kisses, ice-cream, back scratches, and lollipops did not prevent me from turning into a big baby on my way to get shots yesterday. I don't know what came over me. I've known about this appointment for 2 weeks. But on my way out of work and to my car, I realized- I'm about to get poked with needles! I actually called my husband and begged him to leave work for an hour and come with me (aw, what a wonderful husband). As we pulled in the parking lot, I refused to get out of the car. I tried to convince him that I wouldn't get any diseases in Guatemala so this was just a government ploy to get money!... He didn't believe me. He opened my door, stuck out his hand, and waited...., and then reached in, grabbed my hand, and pulled me up. When we reached the lobby window, I told him I could fill out the paperwork on my own and that I wasn't a child. Little did he know, I just wanted to take my time in hopes of delaying my appointment. It didn't work. As soon as I passed the clipboard back through the window, the doctor came and got me. She was fast. She could smell my fear. We stepped into her office where she talked a hundred miles a minute about how to save us the most money, what I would need, what we could get but isn't necessary (?!), and how travelers get diarrhea. Before I knew it she was shaking my wrist up and down saying the word "noodle", and then placing a pretty pink band aid on my shoulder. I couldn't believe it. The shots didn't hurt at all. I was totally fine. You see, "oodle" is my favorite suffix to add to all words. Naturally, I say "noodle" a lot. I was totally distracted by "noodle". Later, when I told my husband how brilliant the doctor was for distracting me like that, he informed me that she was trying to tell me to make my arm loose- like a wet noodle. Genius.
(?!) - this is to indicate my reaction- "Why the HECK would you pay for shots you don't need?!"
